For-Profit Medical Insurance

Medical Insurance is inadequate for Americans.

The For-Profit Medical Insurance business is a drain on American resources.

It is hindering progress, business expansion and prosperity.

It is an insult to human dignity and is saturated with the baneful taint of pride.

Please see my brief text below about an incident I experienced when I was a teenager.

When I was younger I worked at a hospital delivering tv’s to patients. I was walking through a hallway past a door one day and a woman’s voice called out to me.

‘Come here, please.’

I went to see and an old woman was laying in the hospital bed.

She asked me to open the curtains. So I did.

She asked me to sit down. So I did.

She talked to me a little bit and then asked me to read a magazine. So I did.

I asked if there was anything else I could do for her, get water, whatever.

She said, ‘Just sit there. Just like that. Reading.’ So I did.

Then I read the magazine as the sun streamed in through the tall window. It was an interesting magazines. Lots of pictures and good writing.

Outside New York towered above us. The gray, granite buildings reaching up to the sky. The sky, just a sliver from there, was bright blue. The sun washed over everything.

So I got to the end of the third article and looked up smiling.

She lay there. Sitting up. Her eyes closed. Not breathing. Passive. Peaceable.

I put down the magazine and walked to the door.

There was a nurse at the end of the hall.

I motioned to her.

She came to me and I gestured to the woman.

The nurse walked to her and took up her wrist for a pulse.

She held her hand at the woman’s brow, then, carefully laying her arm down she reached for the telephone.

I left the room, but, not before the old woman.

================================================

I recall one other thing while working at that hospital.

Two doctors talking in the hallway outside of a room where a much younger woman lay.

‘So, does she have any money left?’

‘No, it’s all gone now.’

‘How about her family? Do they have money? Have they been contacted?’

‘They don’t have any. It’s all gone.’

‘Okay, then. That’s it.’
