Insurance and God

Even before the people affected by Hurricane Irene had found their feet again insurance companies were calculating the damage.  They said in unison their exposure was below seven billion dollars.  They had ‘dodged a bullet’.  No mention of lives lost and devastated.
Today a representative of the insurance industry assured investors their exposure is three billion dollars - exactly.  Insurance stocks rose on Wall Street as a result.
Children cannot pray to God in school.  You, an adult, are not allowed to pray to God at public meetings or events.
Insurance companies have a close relationship with God that is supported by our laws, courts, judges and police if necessary.
In the insurance industry, acts of God are accidents caused by nature.  They are actually ‘natural’ events.   These events are not caused by humans so they say.  Unpredictable and uncontrollable things like earthquakes, hurricanes, hail, floods, lightning strikes, and wildfires are considered acts of God.  Car accidents involving deer are in this category.
Acts of God are looked upon as unavoidable and completely unforeseen. There is no single individual to assign blame to like an ordinary car accident – except in Michigan where we have ‘no-fault’ insurance.  Irresponsible people and their deadly actions are seen by our legal system as evidence of God’s intervention in our daily affairs.
How can some court flunky tell you that your life was ruined by God for an unknown reason and that because God did it the insurance company doesn’t have to honor your contract?
