On September 11
On September 11, 2011 I was driving home from Walmart in Canton around 9PM.
On Van Born Road I noticed flashing yellow lights.
I drove down to them and instead of an emergency vehicle I saw a light colored SUV.
There were vehicles driving past. There was no one behind me so I slowed to look. The windows were dark and I could not see inside. I considered investigating but that section of road is remote.
I noted that there was no one walking either away from or towards the car. I decided to call the police to let them know about the car in case someone needed aid and to get it off the roadway.
I called the Canton Public Safety Department – not 9-1-1, of course, as I did not know if this was an emergency or not – just a vehicle. I was put through to a night operator and said where the vehicle was, on Van Born Road in Canton.
He became animated and asked me hurriedly which way I was driving on Van Born, east or west. I told him, ‘East’.
He said, ‘That’s Belleville. Let me get you their phone number.’
No offer to let Belleville know.
‘What?’, I asked.
‘Eastbound Van Born is Belleville. Westbound is Canton. I’ll get you the number.’
I said, ‘The car was on the opposite side of the road. That’s westbound, isn’t it?’
He sounded deflated and said, ‘Yes. We’ll send a car.’
Hopefully the car’s driver was found alright.
